Abstract
The gasification of sugarcane bagasse biomass presents a promising pathway for sustainable hydrogen production and effective agricultural waste management. In this study, a hydrogen production system based on the gasification of sugarcane bagasse biomass using steam was comprehensively evaluated using energy, exergy, economic, and environmental analyses. The results of the thermodynamic analysis indicated that the gasifier reactor is the primary source of exergy destruction and cost within the system, owing to the high irreversibility of its processes. Subsequently, multi-objective optimization was performed using the Bees metaheuristic algorithm to simultaneously improve energy efficiency, exergy efficiency, total cost, and the rate of carbon dioxide emissions. The optimization results led to an increase in energy efficiency from 36.57% to 41.37% and exergy efficiency from 29.91% to 31.16%. Furthermore, the total system cost and CO2 emission rate were reduced. Sensitivity analysis also revealed that increasing the syngas temperature and decreasing biomass moisture enhances system performance, whereas increasing pressure has a negative impact on costs and emissions. This research demonstrates that sugarcane bagasse gasification is a promising pathway for sustainable hydrogen production, and the multi-objective optimization approach can facilitate the development of more efficient and economical systems.
